LEGACY OF AMBER (Chapter 24, page 278)

During the night of June third a group of men dressed in dark clothing appeared at the crossing of the Peking-Mukden and the South Manchurian railways. They carried square-shaped explosives, electric wire, and detonators. Their work was concentrated on the South Manchurian viaduct above the Peking-Mukden tracks. It took them several hours to finish their labor, and then they left as quietly and as stealthily as they had appeared. An hour later a convoy of Japanese soldiers brought three Chinese men to the tracks and bayoneted two of them at the crossing. During the struggle the third man escaped into the darkness and fled.
